Warriors, Hawks Split Contests

The Sioux County Warriors and the Hay Springs Hawks faced off Thursday and split the contests, with Sioux County taking the girls’ game and Hay Springs grabbing the boys’ win.

In the boys’ contest, the action was close through the first quarter, but the Hawks’ offense fired on all cylinders in the remaining three periods for the 66-24 victory. Hay Springs led by a narrow 11-8 margin after one quarter but outpaced the Warriors 19-3 in the second for a 30-11 advantage at the break. Hay Springs continued to control the contest in the second half, holding the Warriors to 13 while adding 36 on the board themselves.

The Hawks had four players score in double figures, led by Dylan Young with 14. Gage Mintken, Toby Scherbarth and Logan DeCoste each added 12. Tucker Monroe had nine for the Warriors, followed by Shane Gluth with eight.

The Lady Hawks led 6-5 early, but Sioux County came out strong in the second quarter with a 14-8 showing to take a 19-14 advantage into the locker room. The Warriors were able to hold the Hawks to just nine points in the entire second half. Sioux County’s offense capped the game with 33 points in the final half for a 52-23 victory.

Beth Krein was the only Warrior in double digits, with 14 points, and Sam Toom led the Hawks with 15 of their 23.
