The Sioux County Lady Warriors held off a late challenge by Alliance Thursday night to upset the Bulldogs as they returned to action after the holiday break.

The Warriors had opened up a 13-point lead by the fourth quarter only to allow the Bulldogs to close within four with less than a minute left in the contest. Critical free throws by Kodie Rempp, Karlee Juhnke and Kailey Klein kept Sioux County on top for the 50-44 victory. Overall, the Warriors were just 23 of 42 from the free throw line on the night, leaving 19 points on the floor.

Sioux County led early, going on a 9-5 run in the first quarter. Alliance took its first and only lead of the contest with 3:22 left in the first period to edge ahead 10-9. Their lead was short-lived, however, as Sioux County scored to make it 11-10 just 12 seconds later. The Warriors closed out the first quarter with a 15-11 lead. Alliance came within one point twice in the second quarter, making it 19-18 Sioux County with just over five minutes left and 26-25 Sioux County with 17 seconds left in the half. The Warriors Kailey Klein scored at the buzzer to give her team a 28-25 lead at the break.

Sioux County put together a strong third quarter, going on an 11-3 run for a 39-28 lead as the final eight minutes began. The Warriors maintained that margin for much of the final period, but Alliance began chipping away at it with three minutes remaining. With 56 seconds on the clock, the Bulldogs pulled within five points, 46-51. Rempp’s two free throws helped the Warriors edge back out to 48-41, but Alliance’s Jaelynne Clarke answered with a trey to make it 48-44 with 35 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs sent Juhnke and Klein to the charity stripe, and they each netted one to clinch the win.
