Crawford’s Kolby Welling was the only area wrestler to walk away from the D-4 district meet in Sutherland on Saturday with a ticket in his pocket to next week’s state tournament. Welling was also the only wrestler within a 185-miles stretch of highway 20, to claim a district title.
Welling went 3-0 at 160-lbs to clinch his second consecutive trip to Omaha. He went 0-2 at 152-lbs last year.
Teammate Carter Rudloff had a quick day at districts going 0-2 at 285-lbs.
All three Hay Springs wrestlers fell one win away from heading to state. Wesley Jacobs was the closest at 126-lbs, falling to James McGinnis of Kimball by an 8-7 decision in the consolation semifinals.
Jahrett (106-lbs) and Jordan Anderson (170-lbs) both bounced back after quarterfinal losses with first round consolation wins, but couldn’t quite pull off the comeback.
Jadon Skavdahl of Sioux County was another wrestler just one win short of heading to state, dropping his consolation semifinal at 113-lbs to Brock Burry of Bayard.
Jesse Dunn was quickly eliminated, going 0-2 at 160-lbs.
