Daniel Wellnitz ended his Chadron High wrestling career with his 102nd win and a 5th place finish at 152-lbs at the Class B state tournament in Omaha.
Wellnitz started Saturday’s day of competition with a 2-1 sudden victory win over Diego Maganda of Schuyler. The deciding point came as the third period expired, when Wellnitz was awarded a penalty point.
The consolation semifinals continued the trend of tight knit affairs with Jett Samuelson claiming a 6-4 decision, sending Wellnitz to the fifth place match.
The battle for fifth was his easiest match of the day, taking a 5-2 decision over Cole Maschmann of Beatrice.
Sawyer Haag was also in the third round of consolations at 170-lbs to start the day, but dropped a 7-4 decision to Jackson Phelps of Hastings.
As a team the Cardinals finished in the middle of the pack with 14 points.
