Western Nebraska Hangs Tough In State Tourney Openers


Western Nebraska went 3-2 on Wednesday during the first round of the girls state basketball tournament.

Scottsbluff started the day off with a band as Sabrina Harsh dropped in 17 points and the Bearcats overcame early shooting woes to defeat defending Class B champion Crete 34-20. Scottsbluff will face first year school Elkhorn North on Friday in the semifinals.

Bridgeport kept the momentum rolling as the Bulldogs put four players in double figures, led by Freshman Olivia Loomis-Goltl and Brooklyn Mohrmon who scored 16 each in a 66-48 win over Lourdes Central Catholic. Bridgeport will play Crofton in the C2 semi’s tonight at 5:15 at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Mullen was the other winner, breezing past Exeter-Milligan 53-30. The Broncs square off with top seeded Humphrey St. Francis in the D2 semifinals at 8:00 am this morning.

Sidney, who ended Chadron’s season in the sub-districts, was blown out by Lincoln Luthern 53-20. The Red Raiders were never a threat to the Warriors as they finished their season at 18-7.

South Platte, making their first trip in school history, fell just short against Hartington Cedar Catholic 46-37. The Blue Knights end the year at 20-3.
