Winter High School Sports Season Begins In Nebraska

It’s time to tip it up in Nebraska as the high school basketball season gets underway tonight.

Chadron starts on the road at the Western Conference Tournament where both the girls and boys teams will face Gering in Mitchell.

For the Lady Cardinals it will mark the opener for first year head coach Eric Calkins who spent 7 seasons as the Chadron boys coach prior to stepping down in 2018. He will get a young squad that returns 4 of 5 starters from last season.

The Chadron boys return all five starters from last year’s team and hope to springboard off of the success found during the football season.

Our doubleheader coverage begins at 4:50 followed by a 5 pm tip on KCSR and

– It’ll be a rivalry out of the gates tonight as Crawford makes the short trip to Harrison to meet Sioux County.

Both boys squads struggled last season combining for just four wins, while the Sioux County and Crawford girls reached the sub-district finals.

Tip off of the doubleheader is at 5:30 pm.

– The Chadron High wrestling team starts a busy weekend with a dual at Gering tonight.

The Cardinals return state qualifiers from last season and inject a solid group of underclassmen.

Tonight’s dual leads into Saturday’s Cozad Invite.

First matches tonight are at 6:00 pm.

– The Chadron High girls wrestling team begins their season at Hemingford.

It’s the first year of sanctioned wrestling in Nebraska after it was presented as an emerging sport last year.

Seven girls will make up the inaugural squad.

Matches start at 4:00 pm.

– The Crawford, Sioux County, and Hay Springs wrestlers are making the short drive to Hemingford.

They’ll be joined by Hyannis, Banner County, and the host squad.

Matches get started at 4:00 pm.
