A lopsided third quarter lifted the defending state champion Wynot Blue Devils over the Sioux County Warriors in the D2-6 District Finals Friday night in Valentine. The 64-37 victory sends Wynot to state and ended the Warriors’ year.
Sioux County led 4-0 early after a pair of buckets by Skylar Edmund, but Wynot answered with a six-point run to take the lead, which they maintained the rest of the game. The Blue Devils went up by as many as six as the first period wound down, but the Warriors pulled back within one with 20 seconds left. The teams ended the opening quarter 14-11 in Wynot’s favor.
The Blue Devils used the first minute of the second period to widen their advantage to eight and extended their lead to nine over the next two minutes. Down 24-14 with four minutes to go in the half, the Warriors’ Kodie Rempp hit a trey and Kailey Klein added two free throws and a field goal to make it 28-21. Karlee Juhnke chipped in a bucket and a free throw in the final minute, and the Warriors trailed 30-24 at the break.
Wynot came out of the locker room ready for action, dropping 27 points, including four three-pointers, on the Warriors. Sioux County didn’t have much luck on the offensive side of the ball, adding a trey by Rempp and two more from the charity stripe by Juhnke. The pace was more evenly matched in the final period, with Sioux County outscoring Wynot 8-7 behind two more three-pointers by Rempp and a pair of free throws by Klein.
Rempp led the Warriors with 12, followed by Klein with 11. Juhnke added seven, Edmund finished with four, and Beth and Rachel Krein combined to add three. Ten Wynot players made their way onto the scoreboard, led by Karley Heimes, who had 19.
