State Regulators Approve 5 Water Permits For Keystone XL

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – The South Dakota Water Management Board has approved five water permit applications for construction of the Keystone XL pipeline across the state. Opponents are likely to appeal the board’s decision.

The hearing was so contentious that it stretched into a dozen days over the course of four months as American Indian tribes and environmental groups argued against approval of the permits.

The board allowed brief public comment Tuesday before going into a closed-door executive session and approving the permits with added requirements for real-time monitoring and weekly check-ins with the state.
