Third-Party Damage Likely Cause Of Natural Gas Line Rupture/Explosion In Eastern Neb

Northern Natural Gas says its initial investigation into a pipeline rupture and explosion Christmas Eve afternoon in northeastern Nebraska suggests it may have been damaged by a third party working in the area.

The company says it will take several weeks to get exact confirmation, but examinations of the impacted pipeline segment found a series of scores and gouges.

No injuries were reported in the explosion between Oakland and Lyons. Northern Natural Gas says crews worked around the clock to make repairs following the blast – which could be seen by satellite.

Because of the isolated rural nature of the rupture and blast site, only 3 customers lost gas service and it was only a relatively short temporary outage for them.
