Monday is Halloween and there are special events in Dawes County from now until then.

Chadron Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Gabby Michna is excited to begin things tonight at 5:00 with Trunk or Treat.

The 200 block of Main Street will be closed to traffic at 2:00, but Michna says the businesses in that block will still be open.

Trunk or Treat is once again paired up with the Chadron City Employees Association’s Chili Cookoff at the Fire Hall.

Michna says there’s actually an event for pet owners preceding Trunk or Treat and the Chili Cookoff.

Tomorrow’s event is Fort Robinson’s Haunted Halloween from 4:30-7:00 at the Buffalo Barracks. It includes free wagon rides, chili and a cinnamon roll for $5, and Camp and Candy sites similar to Trunk or Treat on the Parade Grounds.

There’s a pet costume contest at 4:30 and a Family/Group costume contest at 5:00 with the human contest awarding prizes for Most Original, Funniest, and Best Halloween theme.

Sunday is the 2nd annual Trick or Trails on the south end of the Chadron State College Campus and put on by the Northwest Nebraska Trails Association. It’s a family event from 4:00-6:00 in the Thompson Preserve near Briggs Ponds.

On Halloween itself, It’s Trunk or Treat at the Crawford Elementary School playground and parking area with a quarter carnival, snacks, and prizes.

  1. On Feb. 29th, 1892, the Supreme court declared that America is a Christian nation. Our country was founded by Christians and our nation’s laws were established on Biblical principles. As a nation, we should have nothing to do with the pagan holiday we call Halloween, a.k.a. all saint’s eve, all soul’s day, all hallows, or all hallowmas, all of it based on druidic rituals derived from the ancient Celtic festival of samhain. Giving it a less evil name doesn’t change its origins.
