A two-night wake service started Thurs, Nov 19, 2020 at the St. Francis Community Building in St. Francis, SD.

Verdell I. Horse Looking was born on August 25, 1954 in Rosebud, SD to Vincent Horse Looking, Sr. and Marie Crow Eagle-Horse Looking.  Verdell made his journey to the Spirit World on November 11, 2020 in Rosebud, SD.

During Verdell’s youth, he enjoyed playing basketball, football, track, and cross country. 

He graduated from High School in 1972 and attended Black Hills State College. From there he married and had 4 beautiful children, Verdell Jr, Vernon Sr, LaShawn, and Lindsey. He ended up in California where he worked for IBM until he moved back to St. Francis, SD in 1988, to his family’s land. He took up construction and continued that career until his passing.

Verdell joined the PCRA and rode bare back for many years. He also enjoyed caring for the Horse Looking property and preparing and attending The Holy Circle Sundance. 

Verdell participated in the Bigfoot Ride, Rosebud Fair Rodeo Committee, and he was a member of the Drum Group Owl Bonnet Singers. He was a loving dad, brother, grandpa, friend, mentor, and rodeo mentor and loved by all those who were lucky enough to meet him.

 He is survived by two sons, Verdell (Tiffany) Horse Looking, Jr. of Oakdale, CA and Vernon James Horse Looking, Sr. of St. Francis, SD. Two daughters, LaShawn (Jay) Horse Looking of Oxnard, CA and Linsey (Daniel) Salinas of Morgan Hill, CA. One brother, Keith Horse Looking, Sr. of St. Francis, SD. Eight Grandchildren: Landen James Collins, Alesha Michelle Rogers, Vernon James Horse Looking Jr., Trey Allen Horse Looking, Jaimyson Wakiyan Keown, Jayce Aiken Akitica Keown, Laila Airabella Salinas, Dempsey Luis Salinas. One aunt, Dorothy Crow Eagle Jones. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent Horse Looking Sr. and Marie (Crow Eagle Horse) Looking, and three brothers, Vincent Horse Looking Jr., Anthony Horse Looking, Orin Horse Looking Sr.
