Virtual Pilster Great Plains Lecture This Afternoon

The coronavirus pandemic isn’t stopping the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society from holding its annual Symposium and Pilster Great Plains Lecture this week, but instead of being at Chadron State College they’re online events.

The focus this year is immigration with the Pilster Lecture this afternoon from 4:30-6:30 and the Symposium, trimmed to a single session, is the same time tomorrow.

The Pilster Lecture, created by endowment from a donation by a pioneering Dawes County ranching family, has alway been free while the symposium has always had a registration fee but both are free this year.

One major change from past Pilster Lectures, there won’t be just one speaker.

Keynote speaker Dr Omar Valerio-Jimenez, professor of history at Texas-San Antonio, will be joined by a panel of experts to explore immigration in the American West from a national perspective.

Tomorrow’s Symposium webinar also deals with immigration, but focused on the major groups who settled Sandoz Country and how the traditions they brought to the area have shaped the region’s rich cultural tapestry

.      Anyone interested in attending either the Pilster Lecture or the Sandoz Symposium can visit the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society website infomarisandoz.org to register and instructions on how to log in to the webinars
