Funeral services for 85-year old Walter Swan Sr are Wed, Nov 18, 2020 at 10:00 AM at the Woyatan Lutheran Church in Rapid City, SD, with minister Jonathan Old Horse officiating.
Burial services will follow at noon at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD
Visitation is Tues, Nov 17, 2020 from 9:00 – noon at the Sioux Funeral Home in Pine Ridge, SD
A one-night wake service runs Tues from 3:00 PM – midnight at the Woyatan Lutheran Church in Rapid City with evening services starting at 7:00 PM
Walter Edward “Walt” Swan Sr “Oyate Najik Kiniji” (Stands For The People) was born on June 8, 1935 in White Horse, SD to Murphy Swan and Pearl Miner. Walter made his journey to the Spirit World on November 9, 2020 at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, WY.
Walter is survived by his wife, Barbara (Crazy Thunder) Swan; daughter, Carlene (Ralph) Byington; sons, Walter (Lena) Swan, Jr., Isaac Swan, and Michael Red Cloud; step-sons, John Red Cloud and Richard Bruguier; sister, Cordelia Mills; brother, Merrill Thompson; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren.
Walter was preceded in death by his mother, Pearl Miner; father, Murphy Caleb Swan; sister, Clarrissia Tobias; brothers, Carroll Swan, Sr., Orlando Swan, Sr., and Morlan “Rusty” Swan, Sr.; daughters, Debra Douglas, Cheryl Bentley, Clarinda Herrold and Charlene Flying By; son, Wade Thomas Red Cloud; grandson, Spencer Swan; and granddaughter, Elizabeth Flying By.
Pallbearers will be Michael Red Cloud, Mike Carlow, Sr., Robert Zane Swan, Lloyd Big Crow, Sr., Lawton Thompson, Orlando Swan, Jr., John Swan, and Morlan Swan.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Michael Selzler and All Friends & Relatives.
Walter Swan Sr was a veteran of the U-S Army and his arrangements are entrusted with Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD
