Warrior Matmen Add Wins

Sioux County’s grapplers brought home hardware from two meets over the weekend.

Jesse Dunn and Jadon Skavdahl added two medals to their collections, while freshman Baxter Reece earned his first.

Dunn took second place at 160 pounds at the Lusk Invite, and Skavdahl finished fourth at 120 pounds Friday. Saturday’s action took them to Gordon-Rushville, where Skavdahl claimed third. Dunn and Reece each finished in seventh place.

After dropping his first match by a 20-4 technical fall to Braizyn Humpal of Moorcroft, Dunn won his next three matches in Lusk. He pinned Luke Lythgoe of Glenrock in 1:28 and made even faster work of Ivan Kremers of Niobrara County in 51 seconds. Dunn then pinned Jaden VanGundy in 1:46 to advance to the championship. Humpal and Dunn faced off again for the title, with Humpal getting the pin in 42 seconds to put Dunn in second.

Skavdahl went 1-3 in Lusk for his fourth-place finish. Wyitt Knight of Wright pinned him in 1:23 before Skavdahl earned a 19-14 decision victory over Weston Haskell of Moorcroft. Jackson East of Newcastle-Upton pinned Skavdahl in 46 seconds in the semi-finals, sending him to the third-place bracket. There, Skavdahl faced wright again and was pinned in 33 seconds.

Reece, who also wrestles at 120, dropped his two matches with falls to Marshall Munch of Hulett and Haskell, pinned in 2:57 and 3:20.

In Gordon, Skavdahl pinned his first two opponents, Fayt Anderson of Crawford in 56 seconds and Bruce Whalen of Lakota Tech in 3:36. Undefeated Jeffery Forsen of Mullen maintained his perfect record in the semifinals, pinning Skavdahl in 1:25. A medical forfeit in the consolation bracket sent Skavdahl to the third-place match, where he pinned Tayven Jenkins of Chadron in 53 seconds.

Reece went 1-1 in his first two matches, losing in 3:04 to Royal Lulf of Lyman but pinning Anderson in 1:54. Colton Marghreim of Mitchel earned an 8-5 decision over Reece in the consolation bracket, sending him to the seventh-place match. There, Reece pinned Whalen in 3:51 for his first trip to the medal stand.

Dunn advanced to the seventh-place match with two byes and two losses. Devyn Engledow of Mitchell earned a 15-3 major decision victory over Dunn in the quarter-finals, and Gregory Johns of Gordon-Rushville won with an 8-0 major decision. Dunn won the seventh-place match after a medical forfeit by Bronson Freeseman of Gordon-Rushville.
