The Chadron State College men’s wrestling team took three tough losses on Sunday at home in the Chicoine Center at the Chadron State Duals.

The San Francisco State Gators won a hotly contested matchup 24-16, while No. 16 Western Colorado prevailed 31-15 and No. 1 St. Cloud State took the Eagles’ final dual 40-7.

Two sudden victory wins were the difference for the Gators in the 9 a.m. match to start the day. SFSU’s Zach Wright took No. 8 Quade Smith to overtime in the first match of the day, at 125 pounds, where Wright scored a takedown to secure a two-point extra time win. In addition, CSC’s Bryan Zutavern, filling in at the 197-pound role, got called twice for stalling in the second period of his match, sending the bout into overtime where he suffered the same fate.

Otherwise, Quen Campbell, Ethan Leake, and Mason Watt took care of business for CSC, at 133, 141, and 285 pounds, respectively, and Keegan Gehlhausen earned a first-period pin.

Against Western Colorado, Smith and Watt bookended the dual with pins, but the Mountaineers’ stars took advantage of mismatches and the Eagles’ depth was unable to compensate.

Starting up 6-0 after Smith’s pin, CSC’s Campbell was unable to continue his day, and senior Kobe Lepe stepped in. Lepe got the first takedown but gave up several sets of nearfall points down the stretch.

No. 5 Jason Hanenburg, at 149, No. 4 Hunter Mullin at 165, and No. 9 Cole Hernandez at 174 all prevailed, setting up the Mountaineers’ win at 27-9. Wins by Cole Gray and Porter Fox, at 184 and 197 pounds, clinched it.

Again versus No. 1 St. Cloud, the Eagles’ Smith and Watt started and finished the dual with individual wins, but they could not overcome the nation’s top ranked team.

The Huskies only started two of their six ranked wrestlers.

Leake took a hard-fought loss by decision at 141 pounds. The senior from Clovis, California started down 8-0 but battled back to a 9-6 final.

Three of the final six bouts went to St. Cloud by way of fall, and one weight class, 174 pounds, was forfeited by the Eagles.

The Eagles take a jaunt down to Kansas next Sunday, for a one-off dual at Fort Hays State at 8 a.m. MT.
