The South Dakota Highway Patrol says a 78-year old woman injured in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon on Highway 16 Tuesday near Rapid City later died in the hospital.
Her name has not been released, pending notification of her family.
The Patrol says the woman was eastbound on Highway 16 about 5 miles west of Rapid City when her car veered to the right, hit a guardrail, and crossed into the westbound lanes where it collided head-on with a westbound SUV. .
The two people in the SUV, a 66-year-old man and a 65-year-old woman, had to be extricated from the vehicle by emergency responders. Both were wearing seatbelts and suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries,
