Awaiting Update On The Casino Fire Southeast Of The Prairie Wind Casino

Loading

There’s been no update yet on the Casino Fire, which began yesterday afternoon on the Pine Ridge Reservation south of Hwy 18 near the Prairie Wind Casino between Oelrichs and Oglala.

No size estimates have been given and crews were described as still working on hot spots about 10:00 last night as they worked through the night toward containment.

An unknown number of individuals were evacuated, but had been allowed to return before 10:00 with BIA Road 41 reopened about the same time.

The Casino Fire was reported at 3:22 with tribal, local, state, and federal firefighters responding as winds gusting to 40 mph pushed the fire southeast.

A total of 7 aircraft were in action or en route – 3 single-engine air tankers, 2 heavy air tankers, one air attack platform, and one LEAD plane

The fire generated large amounts of smoke, leading authorities to urge caution by any drivers on the highway in that area because of poor visibility and heavy traffic connected to firefighters.

There was a second fire in the same general area. The EM-2 Fire was quickly contained by a combination of local, state, federal, and tribal resources. It was determined to have been of human-origin.
