The South Dakota Highway Patrol says a 24-year old man was killed about 10:30 Saturday night when he was hit by a car while crossing a highway east of Rapid City in Box Elder. Names have not been released.

The Patrol says its preliminary investigation shows the 24-year old stepped out of the Hwy 1416 median and onto the left eastbound lane in front of the car driven by a 27-year old man.

The driver told troopers he had no chance to avoid the pedestrian and hit the man, who was taken to Monument Health Rapid City Hospital where he died. The driver was wearing a seat belt and suffered only minor injuries.
