The annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is just 48 hours old and law enforcement has had a busy start covering accidents and citing individuals for various violations.
As of Sunday, a total of one hundred sixty seven citations had been issued for DUI, drugs and felony warrants. Another five hundred seventy six warnings were issued.
While no fatal accidents were recorded over the weekend there were eight injury accidents involving motorcycles including one seven miles east of Edgemont on Highway 18.
According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the rider of the bike became separated from the bike when he exited the roadway. The unidentified rider was wearing a helmet and was taken to the Hot Springs hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.
Later Saturday afternoon, a rider attempted to avoid running into the back of another vehicle on Highway 18 twelve miles west of Hot Springs that was slowing to make a turn. The bike rider also suffered non life threatening injuries. He was wearing a helmet as well.
Saturday evening, a deer crossed in front of a bike on North Angustora road. The driver was able to miss the deer but ended up sliding across a ditch into a field. He suffered serious but non life threatening injuries. The driver was also wearing a helmet.
