Fall planting preparation comes with a few considerations. Remove dead or diseased plant material from the site and improve soil quality by spreading 2-3 inches of compost over the fall planting area. Spading or rototilling the area incorporates the soil-like media, relieving any compaction from previous crops. For insect control after planting, consider the use of floating row covers placed over new transplants. Lastly, soil preparation can bring weed seeds to the surface.ย  Snuff out germination through mulching.ย
