The Chadron City Council will be one member short until the first week of December.

The council formally accepted Miles Bannanโ€™s resignation Monday after he announced he was relocating to Lincoln at the cityโ€™s special meeting the last week of September. The council had two options: leave the seat vacant or appoint someone to fill Bannanโ€™s term, which expires in December.

Mayor George Klein explained that any appointed member would take part in the two November meetings and a portion of the first meeting in December until the newly elected council members are sworn in. Council members agreed to take no action on the vacancy and leave he seat empty.

In other business, City Manager Tom Menke announced that the remains of the burned apartment building Maple Street is being torn down, and a vault will be installed to protect the cityโ€™s utilities.

The council also declared October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. DOVES client advocate and community educator Jody Motz noted that one in four women, one in seven men and more than half of transgender or nonbinary individuals experience some form of domestic violence. The Embrace Courage campaign urges community members to stand by survivors of abuse and foster a community where every individual is free from fear and abuse.
