Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen Wednesday directed county clerks and election commissioners toย immediately begin permitting felons who have completed their sentences to register to vote in accordance withย LB20.ย
LB20 was passed by the legislature this year but was the subject of a Nebraska Supreme Court action concerningย the constitutionality of the bill. Relying upon the advice of the Nebraska Attorney General, the Secretary of State previously instructed county election offices to stop registering people with felony convictions. Wednesday the Supreme Court issued a decision ordering that felons who have completed their sentences be permitted toย register to vote in accordance with LB20.ย ย
โThe Supreme Court has resolved this issue and we are following the requirements of the decision. With our counties across the state, we are working to ensure that those who were made eligible to register to vote under LB 20 may now do so,โ said Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen.
With the voter registration deadline for the November general election approaching, updated voter registration forms are attached to this press release and are currently available on our website.
