Three open seats on the Sioux County School Board will be filled by two incumbents and one newcomer, according to unofficial election results posted Tuesday night.
Incumbents Judson Skavdahl and Joleen Falkenburg will keep their seats and be joined by newcomer Lane Grote. Grote received the highest number of votes in the race at 340. Skavdahl picked up 305 and Falkenburg earned 255. Justin Harkless, who also appeared on the ballot, had 200 votes cast in his favor.
The school board was the only local contested race on the ballot. Jebb Ginkens received 114 votes to retain his seat on the Harrison Village Board. That race had two open positions, so the village board will have a vacancy that will be filled by appointment, said Board Chairman Dashiell Rohan. Josh Skavdahl earned 546 votes as the only name on the ballot for Sioux County Commissioner.
Overall, Sioux County voted for Trump/Vance for president and vice president and Deb Fischer and Pete Ricketts for U.S. Senate. Unofficially, the county also voted for Adrian Smith for Congress, and Paul Strommen for State Legislature.
Sioux County voted 443 For to 203 Against for Initiative Measure 434, which limits abortion after the first trimester. The county voted 448 Against to 190 For on the competing Measure 439, which creates a constitutional right to abortion. The ballots on Referendum 435, regarding a state scholarship program for private schools, was close in Sioux County, with 310 voting to repeal and 304 voting to retain the law.
Sioux County voters were in favor of Initiative Measure 436 requiring paid sick leave, 311-287. They voted against Measures 437 and 438, which would legalize medical marijuana and create the regulatory body for that industry. The voters were against legalizing medical marijuana 347-265 and voted 379-225 against the regulatory language.
According to the unofficial results, 683 ballots were cast in Sioux County, 567 of them on Election Day. The results will become official once the canvassing board meets later this week. The full unofficial results for Sioux County are as follows:
