The Chadron Cardinals girls and boys basketball teams opened up their season Friday Night with a trip to Sidney to take on the Red Raiders. It was a sweep of the night for the Red Raiders as they won the girls game 62-11 then finished the night with a win in boys with a 45-28 win.
During the girls game turnovers were the story for the young lineup for the Cardinals. Sidney jumped right on them and took a 38-5 lead going into halftime. The second half did not go much better as Sidney was able to extend the lead to 53-9 going into the fourth quarter. A quick quarter saw a running clock and the Red Raiders out-scoring Chadron 8-2 to win 61-11.
Brooklyn Hoffman led the Cardinals in scoring with three points, with Jezy Alcorn, Addison Morrison, Sophie Watson all getting into the scoring column.
The boys game was tight throughout the first half but the Red Raiders stepped up their defense in the third quarter and pulled away to get a 45-28 victory. The Red Raiders were able to control the first quarter to lead 13-6 after eight minutes. Chadron cut into the lead during the second quarter to go into the half down 21-16. The six to eight point margin stayed the same throughout the early part of the second half before the Red Raider defense stepped up. Chadron could not get a good look during the latter part of the third and into the fourth quarter as the Red Raiders took the win 45-28.
Brady Daniels led the Cardinals with 10 points, Thomas Smith had seven. Derek Bissonette hit a three and Talon Jelinek, Creighton Ryan, Tyson Pourier, and Tobin Landen finished with two points each.
The Cardinals girls and boys teams sit at 0-1 and will host Gordon-Rushville on Friday December 13th. Girls are set for a tip of 5:30 with boys following at the Bird Cage.
