The Chadron City Council approved applying for a $20,000 Improvement Grant from the Dawes County Travel Board Monday.
In a meeting with a light agenda, the council unanimously approved seeking the funding so it can go out to bid on constructing restrooms at the Downtown Plaza in February. City
Planning and Zoning Administrator Janet Johnson noted that the project has been in the planning stages for a decade. The restrooms will be constructed on the northeast corner of the plaza where the storage shed currently sits. The block building with a stone facing will be open to the public for use year-round but will be locked at night, Johnson said.
The city has already received $75,000 from the Walter Scott Foundation for the project and has allocated more than $40,000 of city funds toward it. In addition to the Travel Board grant, the city will also ask Dawes County for access to Community Development Block Grant monies set aside for ADA projects.
