Chadron Boys Wrestle At Home

The Chadron High boys team had a busy Friday and Saturday at the Nelson Physical Activities Center on the campus of Chadron State College. The weekend started off with an eight team dual tournament on Friday followed by the Chadron Invite on Saturday.

Friday was a solid day for the Cardinals in the dual tournament by going 3-2 to finish fifth. The Cardinals started off by falling to Cheyenne Central 54-24. Colin McCoy, Quinn Bailey, Zane Cullers and Fletcher Steward got wins for the Cardinals. The second match of pool play the Cardinals fought to the bitter end but lost to Mitchell 40-37. Keigan Vanderhoef, Jayce Hoffman, Bailey, Cullers, Leo Golembiewski each took wins. In the final match of pool play the Cardinals took down Ogallala 53-27.  Carson Long, Tayven Jenkins, Bailey, Cullers, Davidson, Bricen Wright, Golembiewski, and Stewart all took wins. 

That put the Cardinals in the consultation bracket where they went 2-0. The first match the Cardinals scraped by Chase County 36-30. Long, Jenkins, Bailey, Cullers, Davidson, Bricen Wright and Golembiewski took wins for the Cardinals which put them in the fifth place match against Valentine. In that match the Cardinals won eight matches to win 43-28. McCoy, Jenkins, Hoffman, Bailey, Cullers, Davidson, Golembiewski and Stewart all took wins for the Cardinals as they took fifth place. McCoy went 2-3, Vanderhoef was 1-4, Long went 2-3, Jenkins went 3-2. Reid Griese was 0-2, Peyton Forsberg was 0-3, Hoffman went 3-2. Going undefeated on the day was Bailey and Cullers at 5-0. Davidson went 4-1, Bricen Wright was 2-3, Golembiewski went 4-1 along with Stewart. 

That led to the Chadron Invite on Saturday with 30 other teams competing. The Cardinals wrestled hard to finish third as a team with Quinn Bailey and Zane Cullers completing the perfect weekend by winning their weight classes. Bailey also hit a milestone by getting his 100th career pin during the tournament. Joining Bailey and Cullers with medals was Colin McCoy getting third at 106 and Layne Davidson, who lost to Cullers in the title match at 165 to get second. Brice Wright wrapped up the top three finishes for the Cardinals with a third at 190. Also placing for the Cardinals was Cade Smith who earned fifth at 190  Carson Long at 132, Jayce Hoffman at 150, and Braden Wright at 175 each took home sixth place finishes. Also competing in the varsity tournament was Tayven Jenkins (1-2), Fletcher Steward (2-2), and Steven Smith (0-2). 

The Cardinals boys will have to wait until Friday until their next tournament when they go to Mitchell for the Mitchell Invite.
