GASP of Nebraska Release

Monday, February 24, 2025 at 1:30 pm in Room 1023 on the 1st floor of the Capitol, the General Affairs Committee will hold public hearings on LB285 and LB688. Both of these bills were introduced by Senator Dan Lonowski from Hastings.

LB285 prohibits the sale of most flavored E-Cigarette products, which are referenced as โ€œElectronic Nicotine Delivery Systemsโ€ (ENDS) in state statutes. However, Tobacco and Menthol flavors would continue to be legal in Nebraska.

Banning most of the flavors of this addictive product will reduce the number of children who become addicted to them, and reduce the number of E-Cigarettes sold to children and adults. GASP will ask the committee to amend the bill to include Menthol as one of the flavors not allowed to be sold in Nebraska.

Statistics show Menthol is the flavor that is preferred by most Black and Hispanic children and adults. Candy and fruit flavors are preferred mostly by White children and adults. Our laws should protect all children and adults in the same way, by banning all flavors at the same time, not just the flavors preferred by the White demographic.

LB688 prohibits the advertising of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems in Nebraska.
Ending the advertising for this addictive product will reduce the number of children and adults who become, and stay addicted to them.

Current law requires people to be at least 21 years old to buy and use tobacco and E-cigarettes.
