Chadron Council Goes With Salt Lake City Firm To Mark Airport Runways.

The Chadron City Council has accepted a low bid of just under $97,000 from Maxwell Asphalt of Salt Lake City for marking the runways at the city airport.

Maxwell’s bid was nearly $50,000 under the highest of 5 bids received

Airport Manager Scott Schremmer told the city council that he and project engineer Curt Christianson of Olsson Associates were pleased with the bids and the company.

The runways and taxiways were marked when they were repaved 4 years ago, but Schremmer says a special reflective material was used that’s proven to be unsatisfactory.

Schremmer said the manufacturer has tried to address the issue, but he told the council he doesn’t want to risk it.

The Chadron Council also awarded a bid of $162,816 to Buettner Construction to rebuild Chadron Avenue between 6th and 7th Streets.

The bid was about a thousand dollars under Fuller Construction, the only other bidder, with project engineer Dave Coe saying both were within 6% of his estimate.

The street has a substandard base that has led to major potholes and break-ups requiring repeated repairs in recent years.

This project, which includes both intersections, will replace it from the base up. It will also add ADA-compliant curb cuts at all 4 quadrants of both intersections.
