Funeral services for 87-year old Owen Hawkins are Friday August 12, 2022 at 10:00 at St Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in Rapid City, SD, with Fr Ed Witt, SJ, Officiant.
Burial follows at 11:30 at the Mt Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Rapid City/
Visitation is Thursday August 11 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, Thursday at St Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in Rapid City with evening rosary service at 7:00.
Owen Theodore Hawkins would have been 88 years old on Aug. 22, 2022. Owen went to join his Father in Heaven on August 5, 2022 at his home in Rapid City, SD. He is now rejoicing with his family who have gone before him.
Owen was born on August 22, 1934 in Hisle, SD to Theodore Posey Hawkins and Gertrude (Randall) Hawkins. His family moved to Rapid City, SD when he was 14 years old. Owen started working at that age.
He worked with his dad doing farm work and later, he helped his dad in doing mechanic work. Owen was a great mechanic and worked at the Ford Motor Company for about 5 years. He also worked for the State Game Fish and Parks for 20 years, then retired and worked on his own.
Owen married Marie Good Shield at the age of 20. Together, they had a long and happy marriage with their eight children. His favorite hobbies were racecar driving and playing pool.
He was a good man, generous and kind. He was always looking out for others and helped when he could. He continued working on cars and when he couldn’t physically work on them, he would still help in advising others. He had a long and happy life and will be greatly missed.
Owen is survived by his children, Stanley (Laurie) Hawkins, Teresa Hawkins, Patricia (Donald) Schwartz, and Twila Dell, all of Rapid City, SD; siblings, Pat Shipton of Suisun, CA, Mary Vaughn of Mitchell, SD, and Barbara Nelson of Rapid City, SD; 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Owen was preceded in death by his wife, Marie T. (Good Shield) Hawkins; parents, Theodore and Gertrude Hawkins; sons, Cornell Hawkins, Anthony Hawkins, Michael Hawkins, and Edwin Hawkins; sister, Agnes Martin; and brother, Joseph Hawkins.
Pallbearers will be Elijah Prado, Dominic Garcia, Johnathan Tinney, Chris Hawkins, Kayyo Dell and John Herrera.
Honorary pallbearers will be his good friend Harold, Adam Dell, Lupe Grifaldo, David Herrera, Antonio Cooper, Michael Prado, Isaiah Prado, Nikolo Herrera, David Shipton, Gabriel Garcia, Verdell Brand, Brad, Mark, and Jason Vaughn, Joel Nieland, Donald Schwartz, Dmitri Hawkins, and All Friends & Relatives.
Dad had so many friends – too many to list. Thank you all for being his friend. The family appreciates your thoughts and prayers.
