Lawrence “Larry” Henry Joseph Niehues was born June 24, 1953 in Axtell, KS, the first of seven children born to Aloysius and Clara Niehues. He passed away peacefully in his sleep August 19, 2022, in Chadron with his daughter and granddaughter by his side.
Larry grew up in Corning, KS, and moved to and settled in Nebraska in the late 70’s. He met and married his late wife, Marty, in Gordon, NE in 1980 to become stepfather to Marty’s three children before welcoming their own daughter Nikki in 1981 and son Mathew in 1984.
Larry was a loving and caring father and grandfather who was very proud of his children and adored his granddaughters. He had a great love for the outdoors that he passed on to his children.
Larry was generous and kind and looked out for others, helping in any way that he could. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Larry is survived by his children: Nikki Niehues (partner: George Overton) of Lead, SD, Matt (Lacey) Niehues of Chadron.
Stepchildren: Mari (Denis) Rous of Martin, SD, Rick Shedeed of Rushville, NE, and Stephanie (Leonard) Gottwald of Hastings, NE.
Grandchildren: Justine Taylor, Emilia Niehues, and Trinity Niehues of Chadron.
Siblings: Joann (Dan) Hull, Glenn (Beverly) Niehues, Dennis (Julie) Niehues- all of Kansas. Galen (Cathy) Niehues of Rushville, and sister-in-law Barb Niehues of Alliance, NE.
Close friends: John Craig and “Uncle Tom.” who remained true and loyal friends until the end and helped make Larry’s final days fun and memorable.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife Marlene “Marty” Niehues in 1995, brothers David and Mark, and his parents Aloysius and Clara Niehues.
The family would like to thank the Chadron Community Hospital Hospice team and volunteers, Crest View Care Center, and Chadron Community Hospital for the kindness and care provided to Larry in his final days.
