The Chadron High boys and girls basketball teams were swept at home by Gering on Saturday night.
The Chadron girls were held scoreless until the final shot of the 4th quarter and Gering pulled out the 34-29 win just a week after the Cardinals beat Gering for 3rd at the Western Conference Tournament.
Chadron struggled to score consistently, failing to have a single player reach double digits, but had the margin at 31-26 heading to the 4th quarter. Neither team scored until the clock rolled inside of 4 minutes in the final quarter, but Chadron couldn’t take the lid off the basket until Kyndall Carnahan hit a three as time expired.
Demi Ferguson led the Cardinals with 6 points while Savannah Baird had 10 for Gering.
The Chadron boys tried to mount a comeback for the 2nd night in a row but fell short against Gering 58-54.
The Cardinals found themselves in a 14 point hole in the 2nd half, but chipped away behind Tyler Spotted Elk and Broc Berry who combined for 25 points in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Chadron trailed 56-52 with under a minute left in the 4th with possession of the ball, but threw it away and gave the Bulldogs an easy lay-up to take the lead back to 6.
Chadron would have a couple of looks in the waning moments but were unable to convert.
Spotted Elk had a career high 17 while Berry finished with 16. Xander Provance had another solid night despite battling early foul trouble, finishing with 11 points. Uriah Ybarra had 23 for Gering.
Chadron will host Scottsbluff at the Bird Cage next Friday.
