Five Chadron Cardinals punched tickets to 8 slots at the Nebraska high school state track meet with top 3 finishes at the B-6 district meet in Ogallala on Tuesday.
Grace Pyle was the first to clinch a spot at Burke Stadium, taking 2nd in the girls high jump with an automatic qualifying mark of 5’ 2”. It will be Pyle’s first appearance at the state meet.
Defending boys all-class gold medal 110 m high hurdler Xander Provance is making the return trip with a winning district time of 14.34 . Rhett Cullers, also a state placer last year, is state bound as well after taking silver with a time of 14.61.
Malachi Swallow returns to Omaha in the 300m hurdles with a 1st-place finish in a time of 39.14 and Cullers again 2nd with a 39.72. Swallow also qualified in the 100m dash with a 3rd place finish and time of 11.2.
The 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams of Provance, Swallow, Cullers and Quinn Bailey swept both titles with times of 43.26 and 3:24.53.
The Chadron girls 4x800m relay team of Beau Behrends, Makinley and Micaiah Fuller and Grace Pyle finished 3rd and didn’t automatically qualify, but their time of 10:10.40 should make them a wild card as one of the 4 fastest non-qualifiers in the state.
Additional qualifiers will be announced later this week.
The state track meet for classes A and B will start a week from Wednesday.
