The man, the myth, the legend that was Gerald (Sonny) Pourier was born March 7, 1933, in Pine Ridge, SD, to John and Pearl (O’Rourke) Pourier – the fifth of six children. He passed away on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at Stanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SF.
Sonny grew up on the family ranch SW of Scenic, SD, riding horses, chasing cows, and being a cowboy. He rode horseback to Imlay to go to grade school and later graduated from Rapid City Central High School in Rapid City, SD.
Sonny conquered his demons (alcohol) in 1981 and lived a sober life until the end, something he was very proud of.
Sonny never met a stranger and talked to everybody. He loved to BS, and tell stories (he was often the brunt of his own jokes/stories). He also loved hot beef sandwiches, orange ‘pop’, Daylight Donuts, and watching old western movies.
Sonny liked to tease and was super sharp, quick-witted, and inappropriate right til the end. His early morning wake-up phone calls will be missed by many.
Grateful to have shared his life are his wife Mary Jo and her children and his children: Christine (Sam) Stewart of Scenic, Dene Pourier of Kyle, SD, and Kevin (Valerie) Pourier of Scenic;
Sonny was a proud grandpa to Lacy Harris (Brandon Keyser) and Kayla Harris, Rapid City, SD; Ross (Desiree) Stewart, Lily and Lucy Stewart, Albuquerque, NM; Tory Amiotte and McKayle, Dawnee, and Kanan Keckler, Eagle Butte, SD: Dan Amiotte and Sunny Amiotte, Kyle; Jiles (Halay) Turning Heart and Chaske, Nahalay, and Chante Turning Heart, Sapulpa, OK.
He also leaves behind many special great-great-grandchildren; many, many cool nieces and nephews including Bat (Patty) Pourier of Chadron, NE; and his most special honorary grandchildren Paytin, Rankyn, and Kashtyn Wilson who would drive over just to visit him.
Sonny’s family who have gone on before him include his parents John and Pearl Pourier; brothers Loren (Isabelle) Pourier and Jack Pourier; sisters Verna (Charles) Heathershaw, Madeline Steen, and Beatrice Fortune. They are all together now.
Sonny had a full life and we are so sad he had to go on but happy that he’s not suffering any longer.
