A two-night wake service will be held at the Pine Ridge Elementary School Gymnasium in Pine Ridge, SD, starting at 2:00 both Thursday and Friday.
James Fredrick ” Skillet” Mesteth “Tasunka Ikan” (Smiling Horse) was born on February 1, 1968 in Chadron, NE to Fredrick James Mesteth and Thelma (Yellow Hawk) Mesteth. James made his journey to the Spirit World on August 31, 2023 at the Monument Health Hospital in Rapid City, SD.
James is survived by his siblings Roger (Kathleen) Mesteth of Grand Forks, ND, Joe (Veronica) Mesteth, Jen Mesteth, and Jill Mesteth all of Pine Ridge, SD; and Julie Marshall of Shiprock, NM; aunts & uncles Duane (Linda) Yellow Hawk, Geraldine (Johnny) Wilson, Doris Goings, Clifford Yellow Elk, and Henry Yellow Elk; nieces & nephews Jamie, Russell, Robert, Rafe, Riley, Rogan, Joe Jr, Jeffrey, Samantha, Stephanie, Martinez, Bryce, and Eric Mesteth; Frederika Blacksmith, Robert Jr, Beau, Aubry, and Richard (Danielle) Two Two; and all his grandchildren.
James was preceded in death by his parents Fredrick and Thelma Mesteth; grandparents Jacob and Emma Yellow Hawk; brothers Fredrick Mesteth III and Andrew Running Hawk Jr; hunka brother Dave Looking Elk; aunts & uncles William, Tommy, Collins, Laverne, Orville, Myrtle and Betty Yellow Hawk; niece & nephew Alanie Marie Mesteth and Jordin Marshall, and grandson Javon Blacksmith.
Pallbearers will be Melvin Sierra, Robert Two Two Jr, Beau Two Two, Richard Two Two Sr, Joe Mesteth Jr, Jeffery Pourier, Vince Brewer, Gentry Ribitsch, Christian Rodrigeuz, and Richard Greenwald Sr.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Broken Leg Family, Yellow Hawk Family, Sicangu Family, Wanblee Family, Pine Ridge Family, IHS Security & Staff, Monument 5th Floor Staff, Dialysis of the Black Hills, Wolf Creek Virtual High School, IHS Nursing Staff, and All Friends & Relatives.
