Louis Gene McGaa was born on July, 28 1940 in Pine Ridge, SD, and passed away Saturday, Sept 2, 2023 at his residence in Browns Valley.

Gene was the beloved second child of Louis O McGaa and Hester L (Cuny) McGaa, and was a loving brother to his five sisters – Louella.(Jerry)Vifquain, Ann (Gerry) Gerving, Roebota (Don) Rhodes, Marcia and Mary; his two younger brothers Charles and Greg (Frances) McGaa; his in-laws Gerry (Richard) Harrison and Leiloni Lynch and Leonard Lynch.

On June 26, 1962, Gene married Aloma LaVerne Lynch. They both longed for and joyfully welcomed their son Christopher and daughter Rose. Gene’s joy increased with the birth of each one of his grandchildren. Gene and Aloma were together until her death in 2011.

Gene had many careers in his lifetime. He graduated from Black Hill State University in Spearfish, SD, with a Bachelor of Science degree and went on to teach mathematics at Sisseton Wahpeton Community College in Sisseton, SD.

Upon retirement, he continued to help out the Sisseton Wahpeton Tribe by filming many tribal festivities.

Gene was a licensed pilot and enjoyed flying small aircraft. He was inventive and innovative. He thoroughly enjoyed playing pool, socializing, motorcycle riding and keeping in touch with his relatives.

Gene was very good at telling jokes and funny stories that he would laugh at himself along with everybody that heard him.

Gene was a kind, generous, loving, and gifted soul. He touched all of those he met and would help anyone in need. His dignity and respect for others reminds us all of how to treat one another. He will be greatly missed, always in our hearts.

Gene is survived by his sisters, LouElla, Roebota and Mary; his brothers, Charles and Greg; his sisters-in-law, Gerry and Leilani; his children, Chris McGaa and Rose McGaa; and grandchildren, Aloma and Mikailyn McGaa and Cailtin Kennedy.

Gene was preceded in death by his father, Louis; his mother, Hester; his sisters, Ann and Marcia; and his beloved wife, Aloma Laverne. This includes several canine companions, whom he loved, and the most special of his boyhood companion “Skipper”. A joyous reunion for all of them now is our hope and prayers.
