The South Dakota Highway Patrol says one person was killed Friday night when a side-by-side being towed by another side-by-side hit a tree and rolled down an embankment in the Black Hills about 9 miles southwest of Lead.
The names of those involved have not been released pending notification of family members.
The Highway Patrol says 2 men, both 30, were in the ATV doing the towing with 2 more men in the towed ATV – a 35-year old in the driver’s seat and a 26-year old in the passengers. None were wearing helmets.
As the vehicles made a left curve a little after 7:00 pm, the towed ATV left the roadway to the right, struck a tree, and rolled over down an embankment before coming to rest on the passenger’s side.
The 35-year old in the driver’s seat sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene while the 26-year old passenger suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Monument Health Rapid City Hospital.
The two men in the ATV that was doing the towing were not hurt. The accident remains under investigation.
