Omaha police officers shot and killed a man early Sunday morning after he allegedly pointed a gun at bystanders and then at officers.

Killed in the 1:00 am incident was 27-year old Matthew X Johnson of Omaha.

The names of the officers who shot Johnson have not been released, nor has the number of officers who fired. All have been placed on administrative duty until the formal investigation into the incident is completed.

A police spokesman says officers called to the area for a report of an armed man who was “possibly suicidal” made contact with Johnson, who was holding a handgun to his head.

The spokesman says officers had negotiated with Johnson for over 5- minutes when he suddenly pointed his gun at first a bystander, then the officers – who fired and hit Johnson an undisclosed number of times.

Omaha Fire Department medics transported him to the Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy where he was pronounced deceased. There were no reports of injuries to officers or bystanders.

The Omaha Police Department’s officer-involved shooting investigation team is being assisted by investigators from the Douglas and Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office

Under state law, a grand jury will also be convened since Johnson died as a result of actions by police.
