The Nebraska Department of Transportation has announced the winners of its 3rd annual “Name A Snowplow” contest.
NDOT Director Vicki Kramer says a record 1,100 submission came from elementary students across the state with 2 winners selected in each of the NDOT districts.
Chosen for District 5, which covers the 11 Panhandle counties, were Crawford for Snow Slayer and Gordon-Rushville for Princess Plow. Crawford was also a winner last year with No Snow Lets Go.
Department staffers visited the winning schools this week to congratulate the winners in person and give the students an up-close look at the newly-named snowplows. They also had the chance to ask the plow drivers about plows and snow removal.
The Name the Plow Contest was begun to bring awareness about winter weather preparedness and safety to Nebraska’s elementary school students – the state’s next generation of drivers.
. NDOT has more than 600 snowplows to keep drivers safe in winter weather not only by pushing snow off roadways but also by using a liquid deicer and over 200,000 tons of salt to clear Nebraska roads.
The state’s 511 road condition system includes an online Plow Tracker that shows the locations in real time of the newly-named snowplows and past winners at 511.nebraska.gov.
