After 7 Years, Ellsworth AFB Is Finally Hosting Another Air Show

Ellsworth Air Force Base east of Rapid City is hosting its first air show in 7 years today and tomorrow. The gates will open both days of the Ellsworth Air & Space Show  at 9:00 and close about 6:00 with the start of flying about 11:00.

The show will feature about a dozen static displays of planes, a science booth, and flyovers by various aircraft highlighted by performances both days by the Navy’s Blue Angels aerobatics team. The Blue Angels will start at 3:15 today and 3:10 tomorrow.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the establishment of Ellsworth Air Force Base and the 75th anniversary of the Air Force becoming a separate branch of the military. It’s also the 80th anniversary of the WWII Doolittle Raid on Tokyo

Those coming to the air show are reminded there are things they can’t bring. Only bags the size of a small purse or fanny pack will be allowed and small camera bags will be searched. Exceptions will be made for medical or diaper bags.

Strollers are allowed as are lawn chairs, camp chairs, blankets and small umbrellas, but any larger seating or shading is not allowed.

No glass containers are allowed with attendees encouraged to bring refillable water bottles as there will be water stations available. Food is allowed, but vendors will also be on site for visitors to purchase other food and drinks. Alcohol is banned.

While the airshow is free (with the exception of Premium Seating), vendor booths are not so visitors are encouraged to bring cash or cards. ATMs will be available if needed.

Pets are not allowed unless they are service animals. Emotional support animals are not permitted. Bicycles, roller skates or skateboards are not allowed.

Any tech-like drones, remote-controlled vehicles or walkie-talkies are to be left at home. Cameras are allowed, but no designated photography area will be set up.

Weapons of any kind are not allowed, regardless of permit status. This includes guns, knives (pocket, multi-tool or otherwise), or walking sticks (except for handicap use). If confiscated, such items will not be returned.
