The woman who engaged Alliance police in a 6-hour standoff at her home last week made her first court appearance Tuesday on charges from the incident.
34-year-old Yadira Garza remains in custody on single counts of felony terroristic threats and felony use of a deadly weapon. She also faces a misdemeanor count of obstructing government operations.
Box Butte County Judge Paul Wess left Garza’s bail at $500,000 and scheduled her next court appearance for the Monday after Thanksgiving.
. Court documents show Alliance police went to conduct a welfare check on Garza’s teenage son about 5:30 last Thursday afternoon when she confronted them at the door while holding a semiautomatic pistol.
The officers said Garza threatened them, so they withdrew and the standoff began with law enforcement treating it as a hostage situation.
A Nebraska State Patrol hostage negotiator arrived from North Platte around four hours later. Garza walked out of the home around midnight and surrendered without incident. Her son was found in the home unhurt.
