Archie LeRoy Cerny, 98 of Rushville, NE, formerly of Hay Springs, NE passed away Sunday October 6, 2024, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, NE.
Archie LeRoy Cerny was born October 23, 1925, north of Clinton, NE on the family homestead to Frank and Georgia (Novotny) Cerny. He was the youngest of 9 children.
Archie attended Milan Country School and then graduated in 1943 from Clinton High School, Cliton, NE. He worked on the family farm until enlisting in the Army Air Force in June 1944. After basic training in Texas, he went to Traux Army Air Force base in Wisconsin to complete his Radio Mechanics Maintenance and Training Course. He was then sent to the Artic Circle serving two tours on Baffin Island at Frobisher Bay inside the Artic Circle at weather Station Crystal 3. The station relayed all collected weather data directly to England for use in the bombing missions over Germany.
After being Honorably discharged from the military in June 1946, Archie moved to Chicago, Illinois to attend the Commercial Trades Institute to become an electrician. He moved to Hay Springs, NE and was employed by the Rural Electric Company for several years initially installing 2 lights and 1 duplex as the first electricity became available to rural residences.
Archie and Mary Kearns were married October 14, 1948, in Rushville, NE. To this union one son Allen was born.
In 1958 Archie and Mary moved to the Cerny family farm north of Clinton, NE to take over the farming business after the death of Archieโs father. In the fall of 1994 Archie and Mary retired and moved to Hay Springs, NE. Mary passed away in 2007. Archie remained in the home until February 2020 when he moved to Parkview Lodge Assisted Living in Rushville, NE.
Archie a proud World War II veteran he served in the Ary Air Corp. 1944-1946 was a lifetime member of the American Legion and a past Post Commander of Post 161, Rushville, NE.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary, sisterโs, Rose (Ben) Jacobsen, Emily Cerny, Frances (Lowell) Van Briggle, Hester (Rudy) Winter, brothers, Joseph (Evelyn), Fred (Alma), George (Lottie) and Franklin Cerny.
Survived by, son Allen (Janice) of Ogallala, NE. Grandsons, Jason (Melissa) Cerny, Scottsbluff, NE Brandon (Julie) Cerny, College Station, TX, Dillon Cerny, Ogallala, NE. Great grandchildren, Abbigail, Alexander, Stella and Lyla Cerny. Step Great grandchildren, Mya, Marley and David Rupp.
Also survived by numerous other family and friends.
Services will be held Saturday October 12, 2024 10:00 AM at the Hay Springs, NE United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemtery in Rushville, NE.
