Hopefully everyone is having a safe and enjoyable summer vacation! Ready or not, the
2024/2025 school year is upon us. The Chadron Police Department would like to pass on some friendly reminders as we all gear up for another year of learning.
With school coming in session, there will be an increase of foot traffic and vehicular traffic. Also, with each new school year we see new young drivers full of excitement, but still learning. We ask that everyone please be more watchful and vigilant of the increased volume of foot traffic, particularly when students are walking to and from school. It is always a good idea to be extra cautious when driving by the schools at any time around school hours. With heavy vehicle traffic, it can be difficult to see a pedestrian until it is too late, especially if it is a small child. Nebraska state law requires that the driver of any vehicle must yield right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks, so please ensure our children are able to cross the streets safely, even across Highway 20. Many of our students do walk great distances to and from home and school, so please be mindful all throughout town.
Remember the speed limit around the school buildings is 15 mile per hour. The risk is too high to be in a hurry. Remember to give yourself a little extra time and take a second look.
And as always please remember to wear your seatbelt.
Parking needs also increase in and around the school areas. We ask that all person(s) parking vehicles around the schools to be mindful of not blocking driveways, sidewalks, fire hydrants or too close to intersections which can cause vision obstructions. Also, remember it is illegal to park left side to curb as well.
Let us all make this a safe, educational and enjoyable school year.
