Brainstorming Session On Recycling Leads To Plans For Community Trips To Recycling Center

A community brainstorming session last night showed that not only is there strong interest in Chadron in recycling, many residents are ready to take advantage of an offer by Keep Alliance Beautiful to accept Chadron materials at its Recycling Center.

Keep Chadron Beautiful Director Susan Hucke, who co-hosted along with her Alliance counterpart Kathy Worley and Chadron State College student Joe Talley, was thrilled by the standing-room only crowd at the Platte Valley Bank Community Room

Hucke says the group was so excited and anxious to get started that plans were set for the first of what she hopes are many community-organized trips to the Alliance recycling center.

Although Keep Chadron Beautiful will not be organizing or running the May 20 Alliance trip, Hucke says the group’s website is the place to go for details about it – including the types of recyclables that will be gathered for the trip.

Keep Chadron Beautiful has a limited recycling program that handles about one ton of office paper and 7 tons of corrugated cardboard a month, but there is no broad program in Chadron.

SWANN, the Solid Waste Agency of Northwest Nebraska, took newspaper, plastic, and aluminum for many years but eventually dropped the program because the costs far outweighed the benefits as markets for the materials grew harder to find.
