The Denver Broncos hosted the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday for the home opener and fell 13-6. It was the Steelers who got out ahead early and managed to hold off a late game charge from the Broncos to push the Broncos to 0-2 on the season.
Justin Fields got the start for the Steelers in place of Russell Wilson who was out with an injury for the second straight game in what was supposed to be a return for Wilson to the Denver team he led for a couple seasons.
The Steelers struck first in the first quarter with a Darnell Washington five yard touchdown reception from Fields. It was field goals the rest of the way for the Steelers as Chris Boswell went 2/2 with field goals of 22 and 53 yards.
The Steelers had a 13-0 lead going into the fourth quarter with the Broncos struggling in all facets of the game.
The Broncos were able to get some comfortability on offense with two drives that resulted in field goals of 35 and 29 yards but a decision from Sean Payton to kick the ball deep instead of an onside kick late provided the nail in the coffin as the Broncos lost 13-6.
Fields was 13/20, 117 pass yards and a touchdown. Broncos quarterback Bo Nix was 20/35, 246 yards and two interceptions.
The 0-2 Broncos begin a two game east coast road trip this week with Tampa Bay on Sunday.
