Cardinals Girls Compete At State Duals

The Chadron Cardinals girls wrestling team competed amongst the best teams in Class B at the NSWCA State Duals Invite on Thursday. The Cardinals came in as the seventh seed and finished seventh, going 1-2 in the tournament.

The Cardinals started the day matching up against the second seed Pierce. The Cardinals started off the dual going up 12-0 after wins by Laliee Smith at 105 and Josey Werner at 105 by pinfall. Pierce got six points back by a pin then the Cardinals racked up nine quick points with a pin by Abigal Bower at 115 and a 9-5 decision win by Bristol Prado at 120. Pierce dominated the middle part of the match, winning six straight to move the match to a 32-21 lead for Pierce. Chadron retook the lead at 145 with a pin by Adday Tewahade and forfet at 155 to go up 33-32. Pierce closed out the match with three straight wins to win the match 48-33.

That dropped the Cardinals into the consolation semifinals were they took on Wood River. It was a back and forth match with Werner, Taylee Williamson, Prado, Tewahade, Diers, Vivian Golembiewski and Smith picking up wins. The difference in the match was the match at 120 where Bristol Prado won by a 9-4 decision to give the Cardinals three team points as they fell 42-39 to move to the seventh place match.

The Cardinals took on Summerland and dominated 48-36 to finish the tournament with a win and take home seventh. Williamson, Prado, Graycen O’Donnell, Tewahade, Diers, Golembiewski, Smith and Werner finished the day with wins for the Cardinals.

Werner, Prado, Tewahade, Diers, and Smith went 3-0 on the day. Next up for the Cardinals girls is district wrestling to be held in Bayard.
