Cardinals Girls Wrestlers Wrap Up State Tournament

The NSAA Girls State Wrestling Tournament took place Tuesday and Wednesday with the girls getting the stage to themselves for the first time. The Chadron Cardinals had three girls, Josey Werner wrestling at 105 pounds, Bristol Prado at 120, and Vivian Golembiewski at 170. Prado was the one medalist of the group, finishing in fifth place. 

Werner was first up on Tuesday but fell in the first round, she battled back on Wednesday by winning her first match but fell in the second round of the consolation bracket to finish her season with a 36-9 record. 

Jumping to Golembiewski at 170, she fell in the first round late in the second period on Tuesday. On Wednesday she impressed by winning the first round of the consolation bracket 7-0 then took care of business in the second round, winning 7-1 to get to the heartbreak round. She matched up against Ava Ferguson from Conestoga and was the aggressor in the match but lost 2-1 to finish one win short of becoming a medalist.

Back to Prado at 120. Bristol took her first round match by a tech fall to move to the quarterfinals. There she found herself down late in the second period but had a reversal that led to a pin which caused the CHI Health Center in downtown Omaha to roar. That set her up with a semifinal match on Wednesday against one of the top wrestlers in the state. In that match she battled hard but fell 7-0. Then in the consolation semifinals she was involved in another great match and was up big but fell by pin to move to the fifth place match. There, she met up with the girl she pinned in the quarterfinal match and got the same result, winning by pin to claim fifth place.
