Cardnials Slip Up Against Gering

The Chadron Cardinals hosted the Gering Bulldogs for girls and boys basketball to wrap up the a back to back at home on Saturday. It was not the Cardinals night as the girls fell 66-35 while the boys fell in overtime 64-59. 

The girls game was close in the first half with Chadron keeping up with the Bulldogs during the first 16 minutes with the score being 24-18 Gering leading at half. Gering cut through the Cardinals defense in the second half and out paced the Cardinals 42-17 during the final 16 minutes to win 66-35. 

Jezy Alcorn led the Cardinals with a career high 14 points, Reese Ritterbush and Jacey Turman each had five points, Brylee Huffman and Addison Morrison had three, Rylan Berry and Sophie Watson had two apiece while Gracie Calkins had one. The Cardinals girls drop to 1-2 on the season.

In the boys game chaos ensued as the tendency of tightness between Chadron and Gering continued once again. Chadron was the team with the lead at the end of the first and second quarters with the score being 26-22 at half. Gering gained control during the third quarter with a 17-10 advantage in the quarter to take a 39-36 lead into the fourth. The lead for Gering never got to more than six in the fourth quarter then with under three minutes left Chadron staged a comeback. The Cardinals battled their way back taking advantage of Gering being unable to ice the game at the free throw line then chaos ensued. With three seconds left, needing a three to tie it Thomas Smith drained one from the left wing to tie the game at 54 at the end of regulation. Gering took control during overtime to sneak out of the Birdcage with a final score of 64-59. 

Thomas Smith and Tobin Landen each had 14 points to lead the team, Talon Jelinek had 11. Derek Bissonette had eight on two made 3’s, Brady Daniels finished with six and Creighton Ryan had three. The Cardinals boys also drop to 1-2.

Next up is a trip to Alliance on Friday night with Douglas, South Dakota on Saturday in Chadron.
