This is Nebraska Wildflower Week and leaders of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum will be at Chadron State Park to celebrate tonight with a free plant talk and a guided sunset wildflower hike. Both are free, but a park entry permit is needed.

The plant talk is in the Central Group Complex Meeting Room at 6:30 with Chadron State College Horticulture Specialist Lucinda Mays and State Arboretum Horticulture Program Coordinator Bob Henrickson.

The wildflower hike begins at 7:30 at the Pinecone Shelter and will be led by Nebraska Game and Parks specialists Shelley Steffi and Amanda Filipi. Participants should wear sturdy shoes. Water and snacks will be provided.

Bob Henrickson and Arboretum Executive Director Hanna Pinneo were on KCSR and KBPY this morning, talking about wildflowers, tonight’s events, and the State Arboretum.

Pinneo said nearly all states have an arboretum of some type, but that  Nebraska took a unique approach in setting up its arboretum.

.Bob Hendrickson said the entire idea behind the Arboretum and its different programs is to make the public aware of the great diversity of plants in Nebraska.
