The Chadron Cardinals boys wrestling team had a weekend of duals down east. The Cardinals started with a matchup against Broken Bow in Broken Bow on Friday before heading to Grand Island Northwest for a dual tournament on Saturday.
The weekend started on Friday evening in Broken Bow where the Cardinals fell to the Broken Bow Indians in heartbreaking fashion. The Cardinals found themselves down 33-6 with Colin McCoy picking up the early six points with a forfeit win at 106. The Cardinals started rolling in the middle of the dual with Jayce Hoffman at 150, Quinn Bailey at 157, and Zane Cullers at 165 picking up wins by pinfall. Braden Wright at 175 and Bricen Wright at 190 picked up forfeit wins to move the Cardinals up 36-33 going into the final two matches. The Cardinals needed one win to clinch but fell by pin at 215 and 285 to lose 45-36.
Then on Saturday in Grand Island the Cardinals went 1-4 to finish seventh. The Cardinals started the day by falling to Central City 57-22 with Bailey, Cullers along with Braden and Bricen Wright picking up wins.
The second dual was against Pierce where McCoy, Tayen Jenkins, Bailey, Cullers and Braden Wright picked up wins in the 54-29 loss. The Cardinals matched up against the host Grand Island Northwest in the third dual where they lost 44-31. McCoy, Carson Long, Jenkins, Bailey, Cullers and Braden Wright all won in the dual. The fourth dual was the tightest matchup of the day for the Cardinals where they saw Western Conference rival Gering. The dual was settled with a Gering win at 175 as the Cardinals fell 40-39. McCoy, Hoffman, Bailey, Cullers, Bricen Wright, Leo Golembiewski and Fletcher Stewart got wins for the Cardinals. The final dual of the day was against Adams Central. The Cardinals controlled the action, getting a win 54-27 to finish in seventh place. McCoy, Keigan Vanderhoef, Jenkins, Hoffman, Bailey, Cullers, Braden and Bricen Wright and Stewart finished off the dual tournament with wins in the match.
Overall Colin McCoy went 4-1 at 106, Keigan Vanderhoef went 1-4 at 126 along with Carson Long at 132. At 138 Tayven Jenkins went 3-2 and Reid Griese went 0-3. Peyton Forsberg went 0-3 at 144, Jayce Hoffman went 2-3 at 150. Braden Wright went 4-1 at 175, Bricen Wright went 3-2 at 190. Leo Golembiewski went 1-4 at 215 and Fletcher Stewart went 2-3 at 285. Cade Smith went 1-0 at 190 along with Layne Davidson at 165. Quinn Bailey at 157 and Zane Cullers at 165 went a perfect 5-0 on the day.
Next up for the Cardinals is a dual tournament at Chadron State College on Friday before the Chadron Boys Wrestling Invite on Saturday.
