The Chadron Volunteer Fire Department stayed busy in the Wednesday heat this week. Shortly before the noon bell, they were dispatched to a report of grain on fire underneath a grain bin on 1st Street between Mears and Morehead streets. According to fire chief Branden Martens, the cause of the fire appears to be accidental. Crews were able to cool and knock down the fire shortly after 12:30.
Later in the afternoon, around 3:30, they were sent to a hay fire on the north side of Highway 20 west of town around mile marker 55. With just two grass trucks, a water tender, and help from the land owner, crews were able to limit the blaze to just a tenth of an acre. They all returned back into service after about an hour.
According to the Great Plains Fire information page, a hay baler was the cause of the fire.
